Southampton Home to be Followed by Shirley, LI Project

After the Pelham Street home is built and operating, Rosengarten plans to build a totally green residential or commercial community on 100 acres in Shirley, Long Island.

Anthony J. Musso, architect in conjunction with Peter Caradonna of Peter Caradonna Architecture and Planning, East Setauket, Long Island, are the architects for the 100-acre community being planned in North Shirley.

Caradonna said, “The community will be environmentally sustainable with geothermal heating and cooling, solar panels and zero emissions from waste and storm water. The community may include mixed use structures offering affordable housing or high tech commercial properties that will provide many of the services that the community needs.

The Shirley project was just accepted into the Leadership in Energy Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) pilot program run by the United States Green Building Council,” said Caradonna. “It is only one of 400 building initiatives worldwide to receive this recognition. Green building programs started in 2000, but this year they just seem to be taking off.”

Those working or residing in green structures will have fewer maintenance problems and these homes will be less expensive to operate,” added Rosengarten. “The impact on the world’s water pollution and climate changes can be enormous if green building is implemented on a world-wide basis.

Now is the time to implement the information we have from the studies that have been done and to utilize all the new products that are available. Only then will the demand make them more affordable,” said Mr. Rosengarten. “All local utilities and levels of government have a mandate to make this happen.”
