JOSEPH MANCINO For Roslyn Savings Bank chairman and chief executive officer Joseph L. Mancino, getting involved in the community and helping others is something that brings him great pleasure. "It's something I do because I like to do it," said the David Award winner who has been feeding the hungry for many years. "When you do well you should see what you can do to help other people. What you earn and what you own is a loan. How you use it is what's important," Mancino said. It was over a dozen years ago as chairman of a dinner for a fellow banker receiving an award, that Mancino became familiar with the Interfaith Nutrition Network. He went on to become president of the Hempstead-based non-profit organization and is currently a past board president and member of the board. He is also chair of the golf outing committee and has been since its inception seven years ago. Last year the benefit netted $150,000. "It all gets used for programs," he said. |

Founded in 1983, the organization operates 19 soup kitchens throughout Long Island and provides emergency housing and other support services to the needy with the help of 2,000 volunteers. "I felt that the kind of work that they did was something that I thought was extremely important. These are people who no one wants to see," he said, describing the homeless and battered. Mancino's generosity goes beyond his work at the INN. He is president of the Theodore Roosevelt Council of Boy Scouts which covers Nassau County and he's a board member of three other organizations. They include the National Center for Disability Services in Albertson, Nassau-Suffolk Board of Helen Keller Services for the Blind and Long Island University. Roslyn Savings Bank was honored as Long Island's "Corporation of the Year" in 1999 by the Long Island Chapter of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives for the bank's support of the INN and other local charities. Mancino is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the Roslyn Savings Bank since 1996 and is vice chairman of the board of Roslyn Bancorp. He serves as a director of the Institutional Investors Mutual Fund Inc. and M.S.B. Fund, Inc., diversified open-end mutual funds, and as a director of RSI Retirement Trust, each of which is an investment company registered under the Investment Advisors Act of 1940. He also serves as a director of the Community Bankers Association of New York State and SBLI USA Mutual Life Insurance Company Inc. He has served as a member of the Thrift Institutions Advisory Panel to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Roslyn Savings Bank was established in 1876 with the bank originally open for business one day a week and operating out of a local businessman's office. It was the first financial institution headquartered in Nassau County. Today, Roslyn Bancorp, Inc. is the holding company for Roslyn Savings Bank, which operates 36 full service banking locations throughout the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx as well as Nassau and Suffolk counties. It is among the five largest publicly traded thrift institutions in New York State. Mancino has been with Roslyn Savings Bank for over four decades. Aside from spending his time running the Roslyn Savings Bank and donating time and money to others, Mancino enjoys playing golf. He also treasures his vintage 1956 Ford, accompanying it to car shows when the weather is good. Mancino has two married children and five grandchildren. |
